Formula

All units have a fixed liter equivalent. Conversion is the ratio of the two factors.

Volume is the most fragmented unit system because of cooking — US recipes use cups and tablespoons, UK recipes use ml or imperial gallons, scientific contexts use liters and m³. This converter handles all the common cases with exact factors.

Warning: US and UK gallons are different. 1 US gallon = 3.78541 L, 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 L. Recipes labeled 'gallon' usually mean US in American cookbooks and UK in British ones. Cups also differ: US = 236.588 ml, UK = 284.131 ml, metric = 250 ml exactly (this calculator uses US cups).

Results are shown to 8 significant figures and switch to scientific notation for very large or very small values.

Examples

  1. 011 US gallon in liters
    1 × 3.78541 = 3.78541 L
  2. 02500 ml in US cups
    500 × 0.001 ÷ 0.236588 ≈ 2.1134 cups
  3. 031 US tablespoon in ml
    1 × 14.7868 = 14.79 ml
  4. 041 m³ in US gallons
    1 × 1000 ÷ 3.78541 ≈ 264.17 gal

FAQ

  • US cup = 236.588 ml (~8 fl oz). Metric cup (used in Australia and most modern cookbooks) = exactly 250 ml. UK cup (old) = 284.131 ml. This calculator uses US cups — for metric recipes, add ~6% to the US-cup result.
