Formula

Pace and speed are inverses. min/km × 60 ÷ 60 = sec/km; ÷ 1000 to km/s; × 3600 to km/h. The calculator handles unit conversion automatically.

Pace is the most useful number for runners — it tells you how long each kilometer or mile will take at your current effort. Race plans, training zones, and finish-time projections all start from pace.

The math is just distance ÷ time inverted to give seconds per unit. The display formats it as min:ss (e.g. '5:30' = 5 minutes 30 seconds per km). Faster paces are smaller numbers — opposite of speed (where bigger is faster).

For reference: 5:00/km ≈ 12 km/h ≈ 8:03/mi ≈ 7.45 mph (a sub-25-min 5K pace). Elite marathoners run ~2:53/km (20.8 km/h) for the full 42.195 km. Casual runners often sit around 6:00-7:00/km.

FAQ

  • Highly individual. As benchmarks: 7:00/km is a comfortable beginner jog, 6:00/km is a moderate amateur, 5:00/km is a competitive amateur, 4:00/km is a serious club runner. Sub-3:00/km is professional territory.
